Funeral services will be held today for Mindy Suzanne Barnes, who perished in a house fire in Truth or Consequences last Friday, leaving many Sierra County residents shocked and intensely saddened by the tragedy.
The services are scheduled for 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in T-or-C (see obituary, elsewhere in this issue).
The 24-year-old Barnes was the daughter of Windy M. Barnes and the granddaughter of Sierra County Commissioner Bobby Allen.
The New Mexico State Fire Marshal’s Office has yet to officially determine the cause of the Feb. 8 fire, which resulted in extensive damage to the home of Bobby and Maggie Allen, located at 608 Charles St.
T-or-C Fire Chief Paul Tooley told the Sentinel he had just departed a meeting near the Allen residence when he stopped at the stop sign located directly across the street. There he witnessed smoke coming from the home and immediately contacted first responders, who he said were there within minutes of his radio alert.
Responding firefighters quickly removed the woman from the smoke-engulfed home while Emergency Medical Technicians with Sierra Vista Hospital transported her to Sierra Vista Hospital.
She was later flown to Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, where she died the following morning, Saturday, Feb. 9.
Chief Tooley said a total of 18 local firefighters and EMT personnel responded to the fire and rescue.
