Turtleback Mountain Partners LLC (TMP) has asked the City of Elephant Butte to “acquire” the 18-hole championship Sierra del Rio Golf Course and Clubhouse. But officials with the city plan a long investigation, lots of public input and planning before they would even consider such a move, said Mayor Eunice Kent.
The move surprised Elephant Butte officials, who received the offer in recent weeks. TMP announced the offer in a news release sent to local press on April 9. The company is also advertising the facility for sale.
“We were very surprised,” said Kent. “But before we would even think about the offer we would discuss it in open meetings and consider all public input.”
TMP officials were contacted, but had not had time to return a Sentinel phone call, as the call was made shortly before the newspaper went to press.
“If the city were to move on this,” said Kent, “It would not be buying these, but acquiring them. But there is a lot to think about, whether or not it would benefit the community, and whether it could be run on its own with no city dollars.”
