Sink Hole Shuts Down Broadway

SINKHOLE REPAIR – New Mexico Department of Transportation crews were forced to halt through traffic along South Broadway Tuesday morning July 22, to address what appeared to be the initial signs of a sinkhole developing in the roadway. As crewmembers began to work on the area, a large depression could be seen in the asphalt surface of the right hand westbound lane, which was centered above a box culvert associated with the Morgan Street flood control channel. While NMDOT officials were unable to be contacted prior to press time, there did not appear to be any major structural problems with the underlying culvert. Ash Canyon Closed

Flooding

After heavy overnight rains filled Sierra County’s Ash Canyon and began undercutting the adjacent road surface Thursday morning, September 12, authorities with the New Mexico State Police and NM Department of Transportation’s District One office moved to close New Mexico Highway 51 through the area until the road could be repaired. With forecasts of additional storms on the horizon, officials advised motorists to seek an alternate route and to utilize caution when traveling through low-lying areas throughout Sierra County.
