Each year, the American Legion Auxiliary hosts a Nationwide Americanism Essay contest to encourage participants to learn about the fundamental rights and freedoms we Americans enjoy today. The theme for the 2011-2012 competition was “How Can I Show my Patriotism in my Community?” and Manzano Christian School student, Sibley Brawley, wrote an essay which not only impressed the judges at ALA Unit 44 of Elephant Butte, the local hosting Unit, but those judging the competition at the Division level as well.
Sibley competed in the 2011-2012 Americanism Essay contest and is the Class 2 (grades 5 and 6) winner of the Western Division, which includes the states of New Mexico, Arizona, California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Alaska, Nevada, Hawaii and Utah.
