The City of Elephant Butte officially became New Mexico’s 101st incorporated community in 1998. Municipal leaders and community residents will mark the passing of the city’s 15th anniversary with this weekend’s annual “Elephant Days” celebration.
Unless otherwise noted, the weekend’s scheduled activities will occur in and about the city’s event site, located across Water Street from city hall, at 204 Warm Springs Boulevard.
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6
This year’s Elephant Days activities are scheduled to begin Friday afternoon, with an official opening and kick off ceremony at the event site’s main stage at 4 p.m. At the same time, vendors will be opening their booths for business, and music provided by a contracted DJ will commence. The festival’s official beer and wine garden will also begin serving customers. Weather permitting, Friday evening’s festivities will also include a preview of the FMX Brigade Aerial, Freestyle, Acrobatic Motorcycle exhibition.
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 7
Saturday’s festivities are scheduled to start at 8 a.m. with the opening of the Car and Motorcycle Show at the Elephant Butte Inn. Vendors will re-open their booths, and preparations begin for the morning’s “Elephant Days” parade, which will begin lining up at the Marina Suites parking lot at 9 a.m.
Beginning at 10 a.m. the parade will start moving northward along Highway 195 through the city.
Following the parade, community leaders and event coordinators will gather at the event site’s Main Stage at 11:30 a.m. for formal welcoming ceremonies.
At the noon hour, judges will cast their ballots at the Car and Motorcycle Show. An awards presentation will follow at approximately 1 p.m.
Throughout the day, performers with the FMX Brigade will be thrilling audiences with heart stopping aerial displays and skillful riding exhibitions.
At 8 p.m. (weather permitting) participants in this year’s balloon regatta will assemble at the event site for a balloon glow.
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 8
Beginning at 7 a.m. Sunday morning, balloonists will be gathering at Elephant Butte Lake State Park’s Lions Beach for the annual Balloon Regatta.
Meanwhile, back at the main event site, vendors will open back up for business at 8 a.m.
Beginning at 11 a.m. local musical favorites “On Call” will present their special blend of bluegrass and gospel music at the event’s main stage.
The FMX Brigade will offer a final performance featuring another full helping of thrills beginning at 12 noon.
At 2 p.m., closing ceremonies for this year’s Elephant Days celebration will begin at the event site’s main stage. The ceremony will include final drawings for a wealth of attractive prizes.
Aside from the all the weekend’s events and activities, festivities will include rock crawl exhibitions, RC Race Car demonstrations, as well as the late addition of a carnival, featuring pony rides and a number of other fun attractions.
