Delayed Honor Well Earned

As part of the New Mexico State Veterans Home’s Veterans Day ceremony, T-or-C School District Superintendent Dr. Craig Cummins, Hot Springs High School (HSHS) Principal Patti Nesbitt, School Board President Jay Johnson and School Board member Rita Ortiz joined to present a long overdue diploma to former HSHS student Porfirio G. Shaffer.
Shafer was attending his sophomore year at HSHS in 1952, when his formal education was interrupted, by a draft notice from the U.S. Army.
Faithfully answering his nation’s call, Mr. Shaffer participated in basic training at Arkansas’ Camp Chaffee, before opting to serve with the Seventh Division of the 8th Army, which shortly afterward was ordered into action in the Korean War.
After a 14-month tour in Korea, Mr. Shaffer completed his term of active duty in 1956 with the Army’s Second Division at Fort Lewis, Washington…
